Onion prices have increased by 15-20 taka per kg, egg prices remain high

In the last two to three weeks, the price of chicken has increased by 20 to 30 taka per kg. In addition, the price of vegetables and green chilies is still high in the market. This picture was seen at the capital’s Mohammadpur Agricultural Market and Karwan Bazar today, Tuesday.

A visit to the market shows that onions are being sold at 70 to 80 taka per kg in Dhaka today. Last week, it was 50 to 60 taka. Bashir Sheikh, a wholesaler of onions, garlic and ginger in Karwan Bazar in the capital, said, “The price of onions has been high for a week. Earlier, I used to sell one bundle (5 kg) of onions for 250 to 260 taka. Now I am selling it for 350 to 360 taka. Farmers’ old onions are still coming to the market. So the supply is a little low. Therefore, the price is a little high. The price will come down when new onions come to the market next season. The price of eggs in the market has risen to 130-140 taka per dozen. They have been selling at this price per dozen since last week. White eggs are being sold at wholesale prices at Karwan Bazar at 120 taka per dozen and red eggs at 130 taka. Along with this, broiler chickens were sold at 170 to 180 taka per kilogram in Dhaka today. Three weeks ago, a kilogram of broiler chicken was sold at 150 to 160 taka. Golden chickens are being sold at 310 to 320 taka per kilogram. A couple of weeks ago, this chicken was 280 to 300 taka per kilogram. Accordingly, in a few weeks, broiler chickens have increased by 20 taka per kilogram and golden chickens by 20-30 taka per kilogram.

The retailer said that the price of chicken had also decreased yesterday. Broiler chickens were sold at 150-160 taka. However, sales were not good. Since today is a holiday, there will be a large crowd of buyers in the market, wholesalers have increased the price of chickens in the wholesale market. Due to this, they have to sell at a higher price.

Meanwhile, the prices of vegetables have increased due to the monsoon rains in the last two to three weeks. Today, green chillies were sold at 180 to 200 taka per kg in various retail markets in the capital. This is a decrease of 20 to 30 taka compared to last week. However, before the monsoon rains, green chillies could be bought for 80 to 120 taka per kg. Sellers said that the supply of green chillies produced in the country is now slightly less in the market. This opportunity has increased the supply of green chillies imported from India. This is also a reason for the increase in the price of chillies.

The prices of various types of vegetables in the market are also higher than before. Most vegetables, including bitter gourd, kankrol, brinjal, and barbati, are now around 60 to 80 taka per kg. Local tomatoes are almost impossible to find now. Due to this, the price of imported tomatoes is high, 140-150 taka per kg. However, the price of brinjal has increased. The price of round and long brinjals is being sold at 100-120 taka depending on the type.

Mohammad Anis, a vegetable seller at Karwan Bazar, said that the prices of all types of vegetables have increased slightly due to the rain. The price of vegetables has increased by 5-20 taka per kg. However, the supply is good. The price of vegetables may decrease slightly if the rain stops.

The price of miniket rice in the market increased a month and a half ago. Miniket rice is still being sold at that price in the market. Currently, miniket rice of brands like Diamond, Sagar, Manjur etc. is being sold at 80 taka and miniket of Mozammel brand is being sold at 85-90 taka.
